What are Container Ships?
Shipping, a particular branch of intermodal freight transport, involves the transportation of cargo in intermodal containers, using ship transportation, without any handling of the freight itself when changing modes. The method reduces cargo handling, and so improves security, reduces damage and loss, and allows freight to be transported faster. Reduced costs over road trucking is the key benefit for intracontinental use. This may be offset by reduced timings for road transport over shorter distances.
Container ships are cargo ships that carry and transport all of their load in truck-size intermodal containers, which are the classic look of a shipping container as you an see many of them in the picture above. This whole process is known as containerisation. Container ships are the common method of commercial intermodal cargo transport and now carry most seagoing non-bulk cargo.
What you see in the background of this website page is a picture of the world's largest container ship. It is called the 'Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller' Triple E class container ship.
